Roundup: Lit Mags, Quarterlies, and “Home”

‹ Back to blog
  • Carolyn Kellogg at Jacket Copy points us toward this video of Mary Gaitskill on “Front Porch,” which is a rising star among the online-only lit journals.
  • I’ve been reading a new quarterly from Britain called The Drawbridge. Each issue is themed (Memory, Risk, Rumour) and sports such luminaries as Terry Eagleton, J.G. Ballard, and Etgar Keret. Last issue also had an article by Mark Sarvas. A unique format as well — the size of a newspaper, only slighter broader, reminding me of an amped-up version of The Threepenny Review.
  • The Short Review has its new issue out, including ten new reviews and seven new interviews with short story writers.
  • Dan Green on Robbe-Grillet’s complaints about the stultified state of the novel.
  • Syntax of Things has exactly the right take on the diss of Chuck Palahniuk’s new novel. I mean, seriously: who’s reading Chucky hoping to find the salvation of literature?
  • After the raft of books I collected at Book Expo, I think it’s telling that the first book I chose to read was Marilynne Robinson’s “Home” (Link includes audio sample of book). Yes, already finished the novel. Absolutely loved it. Took pages of notes, none of which I will currently share with you in a roundup (I know, I’m such a tease).
