He got up and sat on the edge of the bedstead with his back to the window. “It’s better not to sleep at all,” he decided. There was a cold damp draught from the window, however; without getting up he drew the blanket over him and wrapped himself in it. He was not thinking of anything and did not want to think. But one image rose after another, incoherent scraps of thought without beginning or end passed through his mind. He sank into drowsiness. Perhaps the cold, or the dampness, or the dark, or the wind that howled under the window and tossed the trees roused a sort of persistent craving for the fantastic. He kept dwelling on images of flowers, he fancied a charming flower garden, a bright, warm, almost hot day, a holiday—Trinity day. A fine, sumptuous country cottage in the English taste overgrown with fragrant flowers, with flower beds going round the house; the porch, wreathed in climbers, was surrounded with beds of roses. A light, cool staircase, carpeted with rich rugs, was decorated with rare plants in china pots. He noticed particularly in the windows nosegays of tender, white, heavily fragrant narcissus bending over their bright, green, thick long stalks. He was reluctant to move away from them, but he went up the stairs and came into a large, high drawing-room and again everywhere—at the windows, the doors on to the balcony, and on the balcony itself—were flowers. The floors were strewn with freshly-cut fragrant hay, the windows were open, a fresh, cool, light air came into the room. The birds were chirruping under the window, and in the middle of the room, on a table covered with a white satin shroud, stood a coffin. The coffin was covered with white silk and edged with a thick white frill; wreaths of flowers surrounded it on all sides. Among the flowers lay a girl in a white muslin dress, with her arms crossed and pressed on her bosom, as though carved out of marble. But her loose fair hair was wet; there was a wreath of roses on her head. The stern and already rigid profile of her face looked as though chiselled of marble too, and the smile on her pale lips was full of an immense unchildish misery and sorrowful appeal. Svidrigaïlov knew that girl; there was no holy image, no burning candle beside the coffin; no sound of prayers: the girl had drowned herself. She was only fourteen, but her heart was broken. And she had destroyed herself, crushed by an insult that had appalled and amazed that childish soul, had smirched that angel purity with unmerited disgrace and torn from her a last scream of despair, unheeded and brutally disregarded, on a dark night in the cold and wet while the wind howled

What Authors Are Saying
“We reached out to Lauren to publicize our debut YA fantasy book. She customized a plan for publicity and helped execute it every step of the way. She opened doors and avenues that otherwise would have been closed to us as new authors. She provided us a gateway to publicity and elevated our brand beyond anything we could have hoped for. Her level of professionalism, dedication, and communication were second-to-none. By the time our PR campaign wrapped, we had 14 coverage links, including multiple interviews, articles, and podcast appearances.”
Brianna and Matthew Penfold, authors of “The Intrepid Three: Animus Revealed”
“I am thrilled with my experience of collaborating with Lauren to publicize my first children’s book. Lauren is a talented and experienced professional who is committed to connecting your book to wide and diverse range of publicity venues through her strategic insight, and creative pitches. Our campaign generated coverage links including magazine features, podcast and blog interviews, book reviews, bookstore and author visits, and inclusion on a recommended children’s book list. Her positive support and attention to detail are exemplary. There isn’t a more genuine endorsement I can give Lauren than inviting her to collaborate with me on a second publicity campaign, which I did.”
Terri Lilga, author of “Santa’s Simon”
“Working with Lauren is like working with someone you’ve known all your life and who cares deeply about your success. She celebrates every win, is willing to try any idea, and handles your goals with significant attention to detail. I am extremely grateful for her partnership promoting my book, and by extension, my personal brand. The coverage was phenomenal and made this project feel like a huge success!”
Meg George, author of “What’s Philanthropy to Philomena?”
“It’s been really encouraging working with Lauren these last few weeks. Apart from her professionalism, organization and helpful ideas, she has slipped seamlessly onto my team collaborating closely with me as if we’d been working together for years. She really delved into my book and brainstormed on the different angles we could take to promote it which resulted in a variety of audiences. It felt like Lauren was truly vested in my success and that I would feel good about all the opportunities we pursued. She was flexible in her approach and generous with her time. I won’t hesitate to work with Lauren again on my next book.”
Emma Tekstra, author of “How to Be a Healthy Human”
“I’ve worked with a lot of publicists, and it’s hard to find one that just “gets you” and your work and wants to develop you around thought leadership, which is really the way to go. Lauren was so easy to work with, she just got it, and I didn’t have to worry, things were getting done and I could not only feel it, but I saw the results. She has the initiative and drive that every writer hopes for to bring their book into the world. You write it, but then someone has to work as the matchmaker to introduce it to the world. I’m grateful to had Lauren on my side to get some sparks flying.”
Vanessa Garcia, author of “What the Bread Says”
“I loved working with Lauren. Not only was she my biggest cheerleader, but she was also professional, consistent, and productive. My situation is unique as I live in Indonesia, and she still made it possible for me to connect and collaborate with magazines, influencers, popular blogs, podcasts, and professionals. I still collaborate with most of them to this day. I am forever grateful!”
Jamie Edelbrock, author of “Tangled Up”
“Working with Lauren was a wonderful experience from start to finish. She was understanding and committed to promoting my book on many different platforms. Lauren took into consideration a creative approach to sharing articles accompanying the book in order to reach a wider audience. Lauren went above and beyond to reach out to bookstores and assist with additional research. I am so grateful to Lauren for all of her hard work, patience, and expertise.”
India Blake, author of “Gypsy to the Rescue”
“I cannot be more enthusiastic in endorsing Lauren’s services. She is tireless in her efforts, identifying markets and following up on every lead. My campaign led to dozens of features in national newspapers and spots on television and radio stations in major markets. Aside from all of Lauren’s successes on my campaign, we had great fun working together.”
Fern Schumer Chapman, author of “Brothers, Sisters, Strangers”
“Lauren is a gem. She has been instrumental in helping me expand my platform in a variety of high-quality publications. She is proactive about finding opportunities for publicity and is always responsive and helpful. I have experimented with other publicity firms in the past and was disappointed. But Lauren follows through, delivers great opportunities, and does a wonderful job of advocating for me. I’m so grateful for her support!”
Dr. Lisa Marie Bobby, author of “Exaholics”
“Lauren has been a dream to work with in helping me expand my audience and connect with others in the Bookish community. We had a great rapport from the start and she has been a great listener to any ideas I had. A real strength is her ability to help authors fine tune their messaging into engaging and inviting copy. As an author- I can be a little wordy. Her jump start approach and organizational skills with the necessary follow up was as educational as it was productive. I am happy I decided to hire Lauren on this journey of mine.”
H.H. Rune, author of the “Fine Me” series
“Lauren did an outstanding job for me! She came to the meetings with her own ideas and was clearly motivated to do the best job she could for me. I felt like she went above and beyond what I asked of her. I was impressed with her timeliness and would love to work with her again in the future. Highly recommended!”
Alisha Ober, author of “8 League Adventures”
“Lauren is an effective and precise publicist. She worked closely with me through the launch of my memoir and obtained terrific placements online, on television, and radio. She stayed in regular contact with me during the campaign. I can’t recommend her enough.”
Christine Corrigan, author of “Again: Surviving Cancer Twice”
“While I have published a number of books, this is my first time using a P.R. person. I wasn’t sure what to expect, so it was a wonderful surprise working with Lauren. She was fantastic; not just in the huge number of contacts she made about my book, and the coverage she got me — which included articles, tv, and podcasts. But, she was especially fantastic and patient in holding my hand throughout our work together. Her responsiveness to my multiple questions was immediate and thorough.”
Dr. Karen Gail Lewis, author of “Sibling Therapy”
